Journal08 & Journal09
Woo-hoo! We did it!
~My team presented a lamp called the fire-fLITE by Coleman Indoors for kids. Overall the project was a blast. I enjoyed working with my group to think of ideas for the project. We had some pretty awesome ideas, and some not so great ones but the overall experience was really fun and interesting. Although we may not have looked organized all of the time, we were able to put everyone's thoughts into our project, which made the whole thing run smoothly. Personally I think I work better alone, which was a challenge I had to try to overcome through the experience. I think I was able to do this and I think we came up with a really neat idea.
~I helped our group by finalizing the power point, drawing pictures of our ideas and also writing down all of our ideas. Although I may not be the best artist in the world, I still like to draw so I knew I would be able to help in that aspect. Plus its the part of the project where we actually saw our ideas on paper which was really exciting. I also love putting power-points together and making them look sweet! I think I did a good job of keeping our group organized. I also kept all of our paper work to scan for my teammates so they would have something for their Journal entries.
~I could have listened better to all of my teammates and given some of them more responsibility. I think if I had done this we would have been finished much faster with the project because everyone could have been working on something at the same time.
~But I am still happy with the outcome and I stick behind our product 100%. I only wish we could have done more projects like this but maybe on a smaller scale.

CR10: The End
~I was really excited to take this class because I knew I would love it. I was never the type to jump for joy over a math or science class, so I knew this would be a great break from the normal stuff. Plus after our final Coleman for the Home project, I realized I could actually see myself doing this (industrial design) as a living.
~I enjoyed having this blog because I pretty much do everything on my computer anyway so it was alot easier not having to worry about keeping a bunch of papers. Plus I was able to turn things in early, which was a big help when I have a million other projects going on for other classes.
~The class was not entirely what I thought it would be. On the first day you handed out cards telling us it would be for deciding our groups. Because of this I thought we would be doing a lot more group projects then we actually did. I was somewhat disappointed by this, but I guess you have to learn the process and rules of design somewhere.

~Lastly, I wish you would have commented more on our work. I mean sometimes I thought I did a great job with something, but points were taken off and I did not know why. It's not a real biggy seeing as I did pretty well in this class, but I just felt confused sometimes.
Thanks for a great class!

This week my team and I focused on the details of our product. We came up with a name "fire-fLITE". It's pretty much awesome, I know, you don't have to tell me twice. Our team is still working great with each other and collaborating throughout the whole project. In the previous week, we had a lot of ideas, I think maybe a bit too many, so we refined these ideas to come up with a product, we think will truly help children learn about their surroundings and want to explore the outdoors more as they grow older.
Once again I worked as the scribe for the group, only this time I focused on drawings for our product, and also the kiosk. I really like this part of the project because our ideas are finally put onto paper and we can begin to actually look at what we're trying to accomplish. When looking at our drawings I feel really good because it looks like we are actually accomplishing something, instead of just talking about ideas. After tightening a few loose strings I think we will be more than ready to introduce our product.

This week my team and I began thinking of ideas for the project. We decided to create an environmentally friendly lamp, marketed toward children. Our idea behind the lamp is that it will make children want to learn more about the outdoors, so later on in life, they will refer back to the Colman brand for all of their outdoor camping needs. We have been coming up with many ideas and know what the lamp will look like and the packaging design. We have decided where our kiosk will go, but still need to work on the design and details. We are still looking into the logo. We have yet to commit to a name, but have a few choices. The lamp is made up of everyone's ideas, not just one person which makes working with everyone easy because we all have great ideas.
When we first started working together, I came up with the idea to make something Green, seeing as it is all the rage these days. I also thought bedroom furniture would be a good place to start, which led to the lamp and accessories idea. I guess you could say I've worked as the scribe for the most part,a long with a few other team members. I have always enjoyed working with groups because I think I am able to collect everyone's ideas and put them on paper. Although our documentation may look a bit scattered as of now, that will soon change. I like to keep organized, because I work much better that way, so next week I will begin to organize our notes and work on the detail of our project. I think once we have our main ideas put down on paper, we will be much more efficient in working on the details and beginning to put everything together. For now this project seems pretty fun, but that feeling might change by the end of the whole thing...I guess we'll have to see.

The sentence that most stood out to me in this weeks reading was "...if design is to be something that really distinguishes a company against its competitors, on something more a passing, superficial level, it requires consistent nurturing as something capable of delivering unique ideas". I think this is trying to say that it is one thing to copy another companies idea and change very little to a product, but it is another to fully develop an idea as your own. In order to continue designing, we need to constantly be coming up with new ideas. It may seem like people have already come up with everything we will ever need, but there are still millions of ideas out there that can make things better.
Oh yeah, I also like the caption under the potato peeler on page 119. "Needed by some, appeal for all: OXO Goodgrips kitchen tools-"Y" peeler". I don't know if it was meant to be a pun towards the marketing campaign for the product but I thought the "appeal" part was funny, since the product is used to "peel" vegetables. As you can see I'm easily amused.

CR07: Marshmallow Tower
I enjoyed listening to the designers of Cobego. The marshmallow tower contest was interesting. I enjoyed getting into a group and trying to figure out how to build the tower because that is what being a designer is really like. I think in order to come up with the best ideas it is important that you can throw ideas out to others and hear their feedback. Plus I've learned through this class that I will most likely be working with a group of people when designing, so group skills are important for the job.
This week I tried out the marshmallow tower project with my siblings and mom.
After 15 minutes this is what they came up with:
Team 1: Oldest Sister (Jackie) and Brother in Law (Forrest)
Team 2: Brother (Jordan) and Mom (Janet)
And you can't forget about Jenny:
