Out with the old, in with the new...well sort of.
On October 5th 2010, a little company you may have heard of called "the GAP" launched its new logo. I know your probably thinking "what new logo"? Well as the story goes, within a few hours of its release, networking sites all over the internet began bashing the design of the logo. The logo was deemed unacceptable before it could be used in any way. In an article I read, written by Tim Belonax, he spoke about the Eiffel Tower being called a "monstrosity" when first constructed in 1889. Did you know that? Because I didn't know that. Its funny if you think about it. I mean today the Eiffel Tower is one of the worlds most visited monuments. Anyway, everyone has their own opinions. You may agree with them, or you may not.
People always say "Don't judge a book by its cover", but honestly who doesn't? I think this goes the same for logos. I have always been interested in company logos. It amazes me how a color, font or picture can express a companies whole point of view. I am constantly looking at logos and thinking how I would change it to make it better. Logos are an important part of a company and the bottom line is that if you have one that people enjoy, then you will have more business. In this case, the Gap's attempt in creating a newer more modern logo failed, so they resorted back to the original. You know, the plain navy blue box with GAP in the center. Yeah, that's the one. The question now is will the GAP attempt to bring another logo to the table, or sit back and keep the classic?
This article was interesting because I never really thought about how a logo affected a company. And I guess I didn't realize how upset people could get over a changed logo. I realize now, that it is important to think about how others will perceive your work and take it into consideration. I'm not saying that you have to hold back in any way, but I guess if you want to be succesful in life and in design you have to be able to roll with the punches and take pride in your work when criticized.
All I have left to say is good luck to GAP in designing a new logo! That is if you try.
